Los Angeles-based Knapsack Games launches “Masters of Mutanite”

Masters of Mutanite is now on Kickstarter, Jan 5-28! Press release below.

Andrew Federspiel, game designer of Apotheca and Knee Jerk, and video game designer on Disney Emoji Blitz, Bejeweled Blitz, Zuma Blitz and Solitaire Blitz, launched a new strategy board game on Kickstarter on Tuesday, January 5th. In this deckbuilding game of danger and discovery, players in “Masters of Mutanite” combine superpowers with environmental objects to engage in a new kind of combat.

Masters of Mutanite is the third product by Federspiel’s tabletop game company, Knapsack Games. Each player controls a mutant in an ongoing war for the mysterious power of Mutanite. Players gain powers and traits to customize their ultimate mutant. They combine abilities with environmental objects for devastating elemental effects. The last player left standing is the winner. Masters of Mutanite is for 2 to 4 players ages 13 and up, and plays in 45-75 minutes.

The game features 8 mutant standees that traverse a vibrant cityscape of 8 zone boards and 16 object standees. Players throw objects like cars and water towers to create elements, including 12 fire and water standees and 14 poison and frost cards. The 41 unique power cards enable innovative spatial deckbuilding, so a player’s position is key to their tactics and character progression. As players mutate over time, they select from 24 unique trait cards that synergize with their powers. The 8 character sheets, featuring enlarged character graphics, track Mutanite and life totals through the end of the game.

Federspiel tested Masters of Mutanite with players at game conventions across the US, including multiple Strategicons in Los Angeles, CA, the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, CA, Metatopia in Morristown, NJ, Origins Game Fair in Columbus, OH, and the massive Gen Con in Indianapolis, IN.
